In March of 2009, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) issued a revised assessment of the in-place oil shale reserves in the Piceance Basin of western Colorado. Using a geology based assessment methodology, the USGS estimated a total of 1.525 trillion barrels of oil in place, an increase of approximately 50% over the the previous estimate.
